Only having access to one tank has made providing assistance a nightmare in Overwatch, and some play styles have rendered some tanks completely useless. I've been playing Mercy quite a bit recently, and she's shown to be a great defensive support hero, especially when you're constantly switching between teammates to help them survive the enemy's relentless assault. Zarya need only flip her shield, walk right through all of them, murder me, and then confidently saunter back to safety to put an end to this. The DPS are busy clearing out the enemy while the lone tank tries to maintain the line.
Although the tank serves a certain purpose, it actually serves both offensive and defensive purposes. Characters like Reinhardt, Zarya, and Orissa play more defensive roles, while tanks like Roadhog, Winston, and D.Va offer a counterbalance. D.Va and Roadhog aren't the only characters who act as guardians. In order to advance, a group's members must be able to both attack and defend, and this is made possible by dividing into offensive and defensive units. In the meantime, the second tank fought back, absorbing damage and dealing out enough of its own to keep everyone alive. In some circumstances, these tanks may even serve as flankers.
Tanks with a strong shield are now the best choice on payload maps and similar defend-and-attack formats. Tanks like Roadhog aren't supposed to defend their team, but rather to draw aggro and punish lone wolves. Defending with a hook and some healing juice is significantly more difficult, but this isn't their fault. With the appropriate player, playing tanks built for offense can still be effective, but doing so requires a high level of ability, which makes playing at lower ranks difficult. It's crucial that you know how to push while still protecting your squad from harm. Combine that with a healer whose primary focus is on dealing damage, and you've got a never-ending parade of players willing to put themselves in harm's way in exchange for a few minutes of spectating while they respawn. There's logic to the emergence of the team kill challenge.
