Heng Shun
I have been a traditionally ordained Buddhist monk (bhikshu) for over 40 years. For more than 20 years now, I have served as the academic and college advisor (title: Core Teacher 9-12th grades) for one of a handful (maybe two or three?) of regionally accredited Buddhist high schools in the United States, Developing Virtue Secondary School, City of 10,000 Buddhas, Talmage, CA. I have also taught an Intro to Buddhism course to 11th and 12th graders there for more than 20 years. And finally I am also one of many primary translators in the Buddhist Text Translation Society and have worked on many Buddhist Chinese translation projects. I specialize in the 80-roll Avatamsaka Sutra (華嚴經) and have translated and published several chapters from the sutra, with lengthy explanations by my spiritual teacher, the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua. I had the good fortune of listening to well over 1,000 one-hour lectures on this sutra by the Venerable Master in the 1970's. A friend of mine, a retired Buddhist professor, recommended H-Buddhism to me. Although I have a Chinese Buddhist monastic name (my legal name), I am a 外國人 originally born and raised on the West Side of Chicago.
