Leonardo Marques
My main field of research is the Atlantic World. My previous research done at the Federal University of ParanĂ¡, Brazil, dealt with the last years of slavery in the southern region of Brazil and the strategies put forward by masters and slaves in the aftermath of emancipation.
During my first two years at Emory, I explored two interconnected themes: the migration of Saint Domingue and British Caribbean planters to Cuba and U.S. Confederate families in Brazil in the aftermath of the American Civil War.
My research interests are related to the impact of the abolition of the slave trade and emancipation processes on the Atlantic World. For my current thesis I have been exploring the U.S. participation in the Atlantic slave trade, with an emphasis on Rhode Island slave traders and their connections to Cuban plantations.
