Scholl Center
The Dr. William M. Scholl Center for American History and Culture promotes innovative research and teaching through the use of the Newberry’s rich collections in American history, culture, and the humanities. Scholl Center projects develop research, reference, and curriculum materials for scholars, teachers, and the public. Recent digital publications include Lincoln at 200, an exhibition launched on President Lincoln's 200th birthday in 2009, and From Frontier to Heartland, an online resource exploring the interaction of the local and the global in mid-continent North America from the 1650s to the 1950s. Major Scholl Center projects of the past decade include the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries series and The Encyclopedia of Chicago (University of Chicago Press, 2004), published online in cooperation with the Chicago History Museum. In cooperation with Chicago-area universities, the Scholl Center sponsors seminars that bring scholars and students from different institutions together to discuss their ongoing research in a workshop format.
The Center for Family and Community History was founded in 1971. In 1991, it became known as the Dr. William M. Scholl Center for Family and Community History. In 2008, the Scholl Center assumed its current name.
