Alex Galarza
I am a Latin Americanist graduate student producing a comparative history of soccer clubs in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. My interest in fútbol comes from both my Ecuadorian/Spanish heritage and the sport’s powerful meaning in society. My project combines social and cultural history to produce a study of sport and society during the late twentieth century. In tracing the history of Argentine soccer from a period of authoritarianism in the 1960’s to the democratic transition in the 1980s, my work will explore the conflicts and developments inside Argentine soccer that reflected wider political and economic trends.
