Joe Sheppard
I study Roman spectacles, particularly material culture and documentary sources. My doctoral thesis approached mass spectacles in Roman Pompeii and Campania through the lens of communication studies, arguing that they should be understood as a tool for social control. I have undertaken fieldwork at Villa Adriana (Tivoli) and Villa San Marco (Castellammare di Stabia) under the partnership of La Sapienza and Columbia University.
